Addiction is a progressive disease, characterized by a pathological pattern of chemical use, physiological involvement, and related physical, behavioral, social and emotional difficulties. Addiction negatively affects all persons who are significantly involved with an addicted individual, and significant others often respond in a manner that supports continued chemical use. Knowing this, we encourage those closely impacted by addiction to be involved in its treatment. The primary goal is abstinence from substance use.
Inpatient Addiction Services:
The Joseph S. Massie Unit is a treatment facility for adults experiencing the devastating effects of alcoholism and other substance use disorders. The Massie Unit offers withdrawal management, medications for opioid/alcohol use disorders (MOUD/MOAD), inpatient services, and residential services. The length of stay is individualized and may vary from three to eight weeks depending on the patient’s treatment needs. The Joseph S. Massie Unit is located on the grounds of the Thomas B. Finan Center in Cottages 3 & 4.

The Allegany House, located at 12300 Old Willowbrook Road, Cumberland, MD, helps individuals to learn (or relearn) the necessary skills to rejoin society without the use of substances. Personal responsibility is the goal, and residents are required to remain free of alcohol and other non-prescribed mood altering substances during the term of residency. Average length of stay is 3 to 5 months.

The Allegany County Health Department provides a wide array of mental health services for children, adolescents, and adults. Licensed therapists, psychiatrists, and nurse practitioners are available to meet each individual’s specific need. We believe that each patient faces distinct struggles and possesses individual strengths and capabilities. Therefore, services are based on an individual treatment plan developed with the patient.

Substance Abuse Prevention promotes a stable, safe, and healthy environment for all residents of Allegany County. Program staff works in collaboration with individuals, families, businesses, faith-based organizations, and local and state agencies to prevent or delay the onset of alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use and abuse. Presentations, programs, and training on tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs are available upon request. Information is tailored to meet the needs of the audience. Educational resources such as brochures, pamphlets, fliers, and posters on a variety of substance-related topics are available.
